ALTERNATIVE MICROBIOLOGY COURSES THAT WILL BE REFERENCED THROUGHOUT THE MICROBIOLOGY NETEXT101/102

REVISED: 10/29/99

PURPOSE OF THIS PAGE

As I surf the Internet for instructional material for Micro 101 (Micro 102 for Distant Learning Students) I find other courses that contain excellent explanations of material similar to that which I am presenting, often with graphics and animations. Rather than writing out the specific URLs relating to each topic in the text I will often link to these alternative Internet sources and suggest that you examine a certain topic within that particular URL. Frankly, I want to encourage students to do a bit of educational "wandering" in hopes that your curiosity will be piqued and you will be seduced into learning more that originally intended. For example, if my subject is ANTIBODY STRUCTURE I may send you to this page and point you to one or more courses that have good sections on immunology and you can follow the TOC in those URLs to that specific topic. In the process you may come across other information you will find useful; in a sense it will be the equivalent of "thumbing through a text book" and stopping to read about some topic that catches your attention. Although it is truly hard to believe, there might even be occasions when the explanations in these alternative sites are clearer than mine.

You should anticipate some problems with the graphics. All of my work has been tested only in IE4.0 and Netscape 3.01, so if you aren't using these versions of of the browsers you may have problems. There are a lot of different "HELPERS" and "PLUG INS" necessary for running the various video, audio and other applications on the net and you will have to install them on your computer and set them up to run "on demand". WSU students can call the help desk at IT if you don't know how to do this. I will post a list of these helpers, and their addresses on my Home Page, that work with the URLs I post, but please don't ask me for help installing them as I simply don't have the time.
